Collage, Collaboration and the Art of Gesture

    CLIVE KNIGHTS
    Two-day workshop

    Saturday, June 20 - Sunday, June 21

    10 AM - 4 PM

This 2-day workshop will introduce participants to a variety of collage-making techniques using combinations of found and hand-printed papers (some created during the workshop). We will be inspired by the work of a carefully curated cadre of existing international collage artists in order to acknowledge a diversity of creative approaches.

To loosen up our imaginations, each day will begin with a fast-paced roundtable group collaboration, including Clive’s unique ‘Depth Chambers’ collaborative collage-making experience, and one other community-generating creative group exercise. On day one we will craft papers with monotype printing techniques which, on day two, you will put to work in your individual collage-making practice exploring depth, layering, color, texture (as opposed to image which is most typically foregrounded in collage). You will also explore augmenting your collages with free-form graphite line gestures. Work will be shared and discussed in group pin-ups where participants can offer constructive and supportive feedback.

    Two-day workshop
    Saturday, June 27 - Sunday, June 28
    10 AM - 4 PM

A workshop in color interaction, color mixing and painting in color following the  principles and guidelines of Joseph Albers and Johannes Itten, as well as my own fifty-plus years of practice and insights with color.

We’ll experiment with color interactions using Albers’ methods in color papers for the first morning, then the seven color contrasts will be emphasized through experiments in color mixing in gouache on paper. There will be meaningful exercises in contrasts, color mixing and color composition.

On the second day, we can work in other mediums: oils or acrylic, as you like.

    You will learn :

    1. To see in the world the various color contrasts and imitate them with paints
    2. To see these contrasts in the artworks of contemporary and historic artists
    3. To mix colors with better precision
    4. To use color with purpose
    5. To structure a painting using value, warm-cool and chroma to greater effect
