MICAH KASSELL: TERMS AND CONDITIONS

3 October - 2 November 2024

Every day we sign a contract - wittingly or unwittingly. A contract with a tech giant - A contract with a partner. Take out the garbage, pick up the kids. These terms are seldom questioned or challenged - for the good of order and abatement of chaos. The terms are often static in relationships with family and friends, but subject to change by the gods of commerce outside the confines of family or friends. The conditions of how and where we execute our agreements can often change more haphazardly - and that change can lead to unexpected results, good and bad.

This year I've made work in various conditions, on the margins, and on my own terms. The contract I've signed with myself was to push past habits in my practice and try new rather than fall into pattern. Some results are a revelation to me, and maybe to the viewer. Some may not be as successful as others, but they reflect a fear of complacency and subconscious disregard of curiousity.

The biggest contract we all have is one we never sign - with existence itself. However naive it sounds, the opportunity to make things, pictures and music is what I owe to this existential chance.

This contract can be subject to changing terms and conditions, so take advantage while the terms are in your favor.
