MICAH KASSELL: UNLADED

5 - 28 October 2023

It is important in one’s journey to realize that we can only take in and take on so much before we become weighed down by our physical and mental baggage. In the past year, I’ve lost things that I’ve loved, and also shedded things and habits that I no longer needed.

Through these changes, insecurities have been confronted, loss made peace with, and new synapses developed. Once discovering how to disrupt a pattern, one can rediscover self and see things anew
while also referencing memory.

In making these works, I invite the viewer to see the noise and chaos that is often held inside, but now is literally and figuratively unloaded onto surface. These works often resemble stacks or piles, but are much more than that. They are memories, icons and footnotes to a life dedicated to visual communication and musical expression that take many different forms through unaltered streams of consciousness, unconscious movement and repetition.

These pieces sometimes involve the use of stitched, crumpled and discarded canvas
to achieve a new aesthetic and tense surface that invites all of us to examine our imperfections and how they are our unique markers of self. The occasional asymmetry invites the eye to find beauty in the unexpected. Unladed is a document that is fun, uncomfortable at times, but ultimately one that is not of stasis, but curiosity; a curiosity borne of personal housecleaning and rediscovery.
