KIRK WELLER: TANGIBLE MYTHS

1 June - 1 July 2023
We have little idea what specific story landforms tell.  It is far too long to comprehend, and much of the record is erased.  Epic battles have been—and will be—fought, won or lost.  Missoula Floods.  Celilo Falls.  Tillamook Burns.  And of the beings therein, glory and tragedy are undeniable with each and every predation.  In looking at a landscape, one thing is absolutely certain:  Something happened here.

When I paint, I want something to happen, just like the land forms on earth.  But it must follow the properties of substance and spirit.  What evolves is as much a consequence of these properties as anything.  As I depict landforms, sometimes I witness a hillside obliterate, and columns of rock fall.  It is not preordained by me.  These become the tangible myths telling stories of how it all works, but with no true Place Name.  No mountain or valley stays the same.  But the manifest idea of a mountain or a valley remains.  Something will happen here.
